5 Reasons Bloodwork is Important Even if Your Pet Appears Healthy

Your pet is at the vet for its annual checkup. She recommends a blood test as part of her nose to tail physical examination. It is not uncommon for pet owners to wonder if a blood test is really necessary. Here are just 5 of the reasons why bloodwork is important:

1. A blood test can detect an illness before a pet shows any outward signs. Dogs want to please their owners and often don’t let on they are not feeling 100%. Cats are ‘wired’ to hide weaknesses or illnesses.

2. A recent study found one out of every seven preventative care blood tests on pets appearing healthy showed abnormal results that required follow up. While most tests will result in normal findings, your pet could be the one with abnormal results.

3. Early detection often results in a better outcome. A blood test as part of a preventative care exam that catches a disease in its early stages means earlier and more effective treatment.

4. Early detection often saves money. Treatment is often less expensive when an illness is discovered in its early stages. Sometimes, dietary changes are all that is required.

5. In young pets or adult pets that have never had preventative care bloodwork, blood tests are important to obtain a baseline to have something to compare to as pets age or if they become ill. Because animals, like people, are different, it is important to learn what is ‘normal’ for your pet.

The next time your pet is at the vet for a preventative care exam, talk with her about the importance of bloodwork as part of the exam. Together you will decide what tests are best to ensure your pet remains happy and healthy.
